Interactive Effects of Nitrogen Application and Remained Leaves Numbers on Flue-Cured Tobacco Yield and Quality

The inefficient use of resources always poses risks to tobacco production and results lower quality output. This study was performed to monitor the effects of nitrogen (N) application rates and remained leaves numbers interaction on tobacco leaves. In this 2-year field experiment, tobacco cultivar ‘K326’ wassown using four N application rates(60, 90, 120 and 150 kg N ha-1), keeping 18 and 22 remained leaves numbers on plant. Results revealed that under the combinations of 22 remained leaves numbers and 120 kg N ha-1 N application, the flue-cured tobacco observed more flue-cured tobacco leaves (FTLs) yield and quality due to notable expansion in agronomic traits and chlorophyll contents, and chemical components of field fresh tobacco leaves (FFTLs). Besides, the partial least squares path model of FFTLs quality index and FTLs yield and quality was established by using R language. It was shown that agronomic traits, photosynthetic characteristics, sugars and N of FFTLs had a direct impact on the yield and quality of FTLs and were the key characterization factors determining the yield and quality of FTLs. In conclusion, keeping 22 leaves along with 120 kg N ha-1 application improved the FTLs yield and fluecuring traits of flue-cured tobacco.
