Armored units would be essential to the military if there were a war against China, according to the director of the Army's Next Generation Combat Vehicle Cross-Functional Team. "In order to be decisive, we have to be there with armor," Maj. Gen. Ross Coffman said during a March 10 talk hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies. It is sometimes assumed that armored vehicles would be more relevant for a war against Russia in Europe, but that is not the case, Coffman said. "The reason that you need a land component in [U.S. Indo-Pacific Command] is because that's the only component that will be decisive," he said. A war between China and the United States could quickly spread to other parts of the world, he said. If competition with China takes places on a global scale, then conflict would take place at the same global scale.
