AN ERDOS–FUCHS ? TYPE THEOREM FOR FINITE GROUPS

We establish a finite analogue of the Erds-Fuchs theorem, showing that the representation function of a non-trivial subset of a finite abelian group cannot be nearly constant. Our results are, essentially, best possible.
