This commentary is an abridged versionof a June 2020 submission from thePublic Health Association of Australia tothe Australian Parliamentary Senate Inquiryinto Australia’s response to COVID-19. Inmany ways, Australia’s response, especiallyin the early phase, has been exemplary –led by medical and scientific advice, andprioritising the health of the community asevidenced by our relatively low case numbersand fatality rates. Moving into the COVID-19recovery phase, it is essential to keep a broadperspective and recognise the contributionof public health, and the importance ofresourcing public health expertise andcapacity to learn from this pandemic andprepare for similar future emergencies.
