We were interested to read the article by Odoneand colleagues (1) which described the characteristicsof the general COVID-19 literature base. Appraising10,000 articles published on COVID-19 between Januaryand May of this year, the authors found a majorityof secondary opinion pieces, hypothetical reports andindividual perspectives, with more than 60% of studieslacking original “primary” data. They concludedthat secondary data sources currently dominate theevidence informing clinical and public health decisionmaking.
