This presentation refers to metadata at University of Manchester Library, linking my presentation to the conference theme of bigness. I will be sharing with you my thoughts about the impact of bigness relating to metadata practice in a large academic institution from my position of Discovery Manager within the Directorate of Collection Strategies. This session outlines the challenges managing multi-format content with multi-system metadata can bring in relation to a large institution. More importantly, it touches on how size can provide both a significant challenge and a comparably significant opportunity to advocate for change within the metadata ecosystem. The presentation provides examples of how the Discovery Metadata team at Manchester has developed into new schemas and systems. It outlines how embedding the specialist skills of a multi-faceted team within projects and developments has subsequently built relationships across the library and the University. Finally, it outlines how the power of size can be utilised to coordinate a regional voice such as Northern Collaboration to strengthen advocacy for metadata quality and share good practice. Let me start by introducing you to the background, outlining the landscape which I will be referring to, and giving an overview of the size and significance of the Library Services, its diverse and specialist collections, and the ranges of audiences impacted by services we provide.
