Thrombocytopenia to Reactive Thrombocytosis in Scrub Typhus- The Play of Platelets

Platelets play a major role in primary hemostasis and apart fromthat, they are acute phase reactants. Platelet counts increase inresponse to systemic infections, in?ammation, bleeding. Thisresponse is called reactive or secondary thrombocytosis. Reactivethrombocytosis is different from primary/essential thrombocytosiswhich occurs due to a clonal proliferation of platelet progenitors inthe bone marrow. We present the case of a young male infectedwith Scrub typhus, who had initial thrombocytopenia and laterdeveloped reactive thrombocytosis.
