Oceanography 2018 Re-establishing sustainable coastal protection by mimicking natural processes - Anne Marie Clements - Anne Clements and Associates Pty Ltd.
Coasts worldwide are ravaged by majorstorms. Planning on exposed coastsrequires an understanding of the impacts ofprevious storm events. The approach takenfor storm protection in this project was tore-establish native dune ecosystems withtheir inherent ability to withstand andrecover from storms, rather than toconstruct a rigid engineered seawall. TheMay-June 1974 storms on the Australianeast coast provided an impact benchmarkfor the likely "1 in 100-year events" for theMagenta Shores project. The calculatedstorm bite on previously mined Magentabeach dunes was up to 300m3 of sand perlinear meter. Mineral sand mining resultedin highly erodible loose quartz sand,'stabilized' by the South AfricanChrysanthemoides monilifera subsp.rotundata (Bitou bush). These highlydegraded coastal ecosystems were onirregular landforms with a reducedoccurrence of soil binding fungi andassociated native host plants. Regularmonitoring showed that colonizationoccurred in stages, with increases indiversity dependent on the ongoingremoval of dense bitou seedlings.
