β-TCP was successfully synthesized using cuttlebone as a raw material, which was considered to be a calcium source. The calcium source from cuttlebone and phosphoric acid were hydrothermally prepared for 2?h at ambient temperatures. The effect of the sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) concentration (ranging from 0 to 6 critical micelle concentrations (CMC)) was assessed. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction were employed to investigate the structural properties of the β-TCP. The particles presented irregularly shaped morphologies with variations in size. Brunauer–Emmett–Teller and dynamic light scattering were employed to evaluate the surface properties. No significant change was observed with variations in the CMC. We carried out preliminary investigations of the cell cytotoxicity against mouse fibroblasts. None of the conditions presented cell cytotoxicity. We can conclude that β-TCP prepared from cuttlebone can be used as a medical material.
