There were many enlightening presentations. TheinauguralJohnMoche MemorialLecture was given by Prof. Mike Sathekge, who emphasizedthesafety and effectiveness ofepidermalradioisotopetherapy using rhenium-188 for non-melanocyticskin tumors. AlanMenteradvocated theconcepts of psoriaticarthritis, stressing dactylitisand enthesitis, whereas Chris Griffiths linked the brain–skin axis with psoriasis. Menteralsospotlighted cardiovascularcomorbidities in psoriasis. He noted that patients withmoderateto severe psoriasis had areduced lifeexpectancy ofapproximately 5 years because ofcardiovascular disease, withmethotrexate being protectiveagainstatherosclerosisand tumor necrosis factoralpha blockers preventing itand possibly reducingmyocardialinfarction rates. Chris Griffiths focused on preventing aging, stressing rapamycin andmetformin as possibleinterventions to extend lifespan. Jonathan Smith covered thefuture ofJanus kinaseinhibitors for vitiligo, whereas ImranMajid revealed his novelsmash grafting approach. Dagmar Whitaker delineated vitiligo treatment in specialsites, whereas Robert A. Schwartzhighlighted antioxidant prospects for vitiligo. GaryLevy evinced the value ofearly diagnosis ofmelanoma. Hendrick Motswalediskillfully chairedthe dermatological pearls session, withWillie Visser sharing treatment pearls including the use oftopicaltimololfor pyogenic granulomas, RanksLehloenya providing an acne update, Daniela Teneaexplaining the puzzle ofskin patterns,and HilaryCarman elaborating on the perplexingconcept ofmultiplechemicalsensitivity. Willie Visser stressed an evidence-based approach to thethreestages of hidradenitis suppurativa,beginning for Stage 1 with topicalclindamycin (1%) for 12 weeksand in StageII,adding doxycycline(100mg) daily for 2–3 months. Prof.Bernado Rapoport underlined the value ofimmunecheckpoint inhibitorsaseffectiveagainstadvanced melanoma. Prof. Francois Jordaan chairedtheresident presentation competition, withRobert M. Weiss, Wayne Grayson,and Robert A. Schwartzserving as thethreejudges.
