A case study of off-hour delivery collaboration and cost-sharing between freight receivers and carriers

This paper is concerned with using MATSim to investigate off-hour delivery collaboration between a carrier and receivers agents in the City of Cape Town, South Africa. Results indicate that the carrier’s delivery cost reduced by up to 12.1% when more receivers were willing to accept off-hour deliveries. This reduction was facilitated by the ability of the carrier to use more extra-large delivery vehicles and better utilise the capacity of its vehicles during deliveries, decreasing its delivery cost per tonne. In addition, it was found that the majority of grand coalition receivers were willing to accept off-hour deliveries when carrier cost savings were transferred to them.
