摘要

An evidence-based, multiscale approach to specifying surface topographies, with tolerancing is proposed. This approach would support the design of products and manufacturing processes where surface topographies are critical, or influence more than one function. Suh’s axiomatic design is used for this development. Multiscale analyses and characterizations of topographies are proposed to facilitate the discovery of correlations of topographies with performance and processing. A value chain is proposed for propagating the tolerances from the customer domain through the functional, physical, and process domains while maintaining independence and maximizing the probability of success (axioms one and two).
