Mediterranean spotted fever results in high mortalitydue to a lack of availability of diagnostic tests. Usingquantitative proteomics, Zhao et al (Am J Pathol 2020,307e322) analyzed the proteins expressed during Rickettsiainfection to identify potential biomarkers. Analysisof secreted proteins from primary human umbilicalvein endothelial cells infected with Rickettsia conorii, and proteins present in the plasma and serum derivedfrom mice and humans infected with R. conorii independentlyidentified one rickettsial putative amidase,RC0497, to be differentially expressed. RC0497 mayserve as a biomarker for diagnosing Rickettsialinfection.
