History of the Beta Phi Mu, Beta Psi Chapter at The University of Southern Mississippi

The Beta Phi Mu International Library & InformationStudies Honor Society was founded in 1948 by agroup of leading librarians and library educators torecognize and encourage scholastic achievementamong library and information studies students. BetaPhi Mu was formally admitted to membership in theAssociation of College Honor Societies in 1969 andbecame an affiliate of the American LibraryAssociation in 1998. Our name comes from theinitials of the Greek words Bibliothekarios philaxmathesis, meaning “librarians are the guardians ofknowledge” (Beta Phi Mu, 2012). The motto, Aliisinserviendo consumor, meaning “Consumed in theservice of others” was selected by the foundersbased on the concept of the dedication of librariansand other information professionals to the service ofothers (Beta Phi Mu, 2012). The insignia of Beta PhiMu is the dolphin and anchor, mark of the Venetianprinter Aldus Manutius, who endeavored to createbeautiful editions of the Greek and Latin classics anddedicated his life to making his works accessible tomany.
