Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) wasfirst recognised in the world on 26 February 2003in Hanoi, Vietnam. At that time, the causative agentwas unknown. The main signs and symptomsincluded high fever, cough, shortness of breathor breathing difficulties. A proportion of patientsdeveloped severe pneumonia progressing torespiratory distress requiring assisted ventilation.
