Surgical treatment for zygomatic implant related maxillary sinusitis: A method for implant salvage

Dentition and dental restoration play an important role in mastica- tion, speech and facial aesthetics. Dental restoration options include traditional dentures and surgical implants to support dental prostheses. While dental implants provide improved prosthesis stability and comfort relative to dentures, an adequate bone stock is required for standard implant placement [1]. Patients with moderate to severely resorbed bone of the posterior maxilla require augmentation prior to placement of conventional implants. This may be accomplished with bone grafts or alloplastic bone substitutes and requires multiple surgical procedures with some risk for graft or implant failure. Zygomatic implants represent an alternative for patients who fail this multi-stage attempt at rebuilding adequate bone stock [1,2]. Zygomatic implants have several potential advantages including fewer surgical interventions, efficacy in the setting of poor posterior maxillary bone, and earlier implant utilization [3]. However, the increased complexity and risk of complications limit the use of this procedure. While practice patterns vary, zygomatic implants are often reserved for dental restoration in patients who fail traditional implants, or when implants with sinus augmentation are not an option [2,4,5].
