Re-appearance of glanders into Western Europe

Glanders is a zoonotic solipedassociateddisease caused bythe Gram-negative bacteriumBurkholderia mallei. Typical clinicalsigns in horses occur after anincubation period of 3–5 days,or longer, with transient fever,and later with ulcerations in therespiratory tract and nodulespredominantly found in thelungs [1]. The cutaneous form ofglanders (‘farcy’) is characterisedby tumours and solid or rupturedgranulomas in the skin, and abscessformation along lymphatic vessels.Unilateral purulent nasal dischargeis frequently seen. Clinical signs ofboth forms are often mixed but onlyin the respiratory form of glandersdo lung lesions occur regularly [1].
