The first epidemic almostcertainly occurred betweenAD 376 and AD 386.The first available clinicaldescriptions of the disease weremade in 1712 by BernardinoRamazzini (1633-1714), seniorprofessor of medicine at PaduaUniversity. He admitted that therewere similarities between rinderpestand smallpox.
