Preoperativefasting involves being nil bymouth beforesurgical procedures requiring sedation oranaesthesia.[1] In the postoperative period,completeavoidance oforal dietary intakeis practiced, tillrecovery of bowelfunction forabdominalsurgeries.[2] Impairment orabolition ofairway reflexes following deep sedation oranaesthesiacan lead to pulmonary aspiration of gastriccontents.[3] Theidealcondition for minimising therisk ofregurgitation and aspiration isan empty stomachbefore deep sedation oranaesthesia, whichmay beimpossibleto achieve dueto thecontinuous gastricsecretory activity alongwith impaired physiology dueto variousaetiologiesencountered in the preoperative period.
