“Hand for liver” — A new approach for learning liver segmentation for medical students

Historically, the concept of liver segmentation began at the end of the fifteenth century and continued to evolve until 1954, when Couinaud 1 introduced a more complete eight-segment division. Liver segmentation can facilitate accurate description in imaging studies and provide guidance for liver surgery. It is the anatomical basis for accurate liversegment resection and for the important and difficult conceptof medical anatomy for medical students. 2 The ste- reoscopic structure of the liver segments is complex and abstract. It is difficult for medical students to understand and memorize because they lack experience with hepatobiliary surgery.
