This research aims to reveal and describe nationalism in the short stories of Panjebar Semangat magazine and the Panjebar Semangat magazine contribution to the development of nasionalism in Indonesia. This research uses the perspective of nationalism according to Ben Anderson and Kahin by using sociology of literature approach. The data source of this research was Panjebar Semangat magazine in 1937–1940 and it rst issued on September 2 nd 1933. Data collection was done at Panjebar Semangat editor’s of ce in Surabaya by using documentation method supported by reading, listening and note taking techniques. Data analysis was started with interpreting nationalism in the short story texts and then discussed about Panjebar Semangat magazine as the publisher and publishing media. The results showed that the short stories in Panjebar Semangat magazine decisived young people, the hope of nation who active in the movement and always willing to sacri ce for? the independence and glory of the nation. Panjebar Semangat magazine brought the spirit of nationalism to the majority of its rubrics. Nationalism in the Panjebar Semangat magazine illustrated cultural nationalism and political nationalism.
