Fostering local production of essential medicines in Nigeria

Consistent availability and access tomedicines in low- and middle-incomecountries, particularly in sub-SaharanAfrica, is a challenge. As a result, thegovernments in these countries haveshown increasing interest in localpharmaceutical production as a meansof promoting technology transfer,building capacity and improving accessto essential medicines.1 In 2019, theNational Agency for Food and DrugAdministration and Control in Nigeriaintroduced the Five Plus Five-YearValidity (Migration to Local Production)policy,2 in support of producingessential medicines locally. In line withthis policy, as of 1 May 2019, a newlyregistered imported product is given amaximum period of 10 years (five yearsof initial registration plus another fiveyears of renewal registration) to migrateto local production.
