NEWTOWN ZERO CONCEPT 1: Adaptive reuse for addressing social housing in Johannesburg

A densified low cost social and student housing conceptmeant as one option to address the housing shortagein inner Johannesburg, South Africa. Within thecity’s urban fabric, there are a few hundred abandonedbuildings which, as a result, are contributing to the city’surban decay, becoming places which are home to illegalactivity. With the use of the Johannesburg Metro TransitBuilding, an old storage and service building for tramsand buses in the 1930’s this concept is meant to housestudents and citizens who work in the inner city andwould like to live there as well, assisting in avoidinghours of daily commutes to and from work for thosewho live outside the city and contributing to the pursuitof the walkable city.
