BNDES' concession roll-out off to a flying start

Two successful auctions in the past month helped to get Brazilian state development bank BNDES' $10 billion roll-out of water concessions off to a positive start, paving the way for the big prize of Rio de Janeiro later this year. BRK Ambiental agreed to pay an upfront fee of just over BRL2 billion ($355 million) for the right to run a 35-year water and wastewater concession in Maceio (Alagoas), while Aegea Saneamento emerged as the low bidder for a 30-year wastewater PPP in Cariacica (Espirito Santo), offering a fee of BRLo.99/m~3 (a 38% discount to the pre-auction estimate).
