Applications of adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscopes

Adaptive Optics, when coupled with a Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscope (AOSLO), provide superb high speed imaging of the living human retina. Modern AOSLO systems provide lateral resolution better than 2 microns, and are increasingly being adapted to provide multiple types of imaging simultaneously. In recent years a combination of confocal and multiply scattered light imaging has proven effective in increasing the cells and processes available for study by vision scientists. This talk will summarize the enabling technologies leading to this increased capability and increased utility of AOSLO technology. I will summarize some of the studies being done in my, as well as other laboratories that are expanding our knowledge of the retina. Examples of our ability to provide high resolution mapping of photoreceptors, blood flow, vascular networks, as well as ganglion cells and nerve fiber layers will be presented, as well as brief examples of dynamic imaging of visually driven changes to the retina.
