Duringdevelopment,cellschangetheirpositionextensively.Althoughthebasiccellularmechanismsinvolvedincelllocomotionhavebeenstudiedmostlyinculturedcells,geneticandmolecularapproachesusingmodelorganismsarestartingtoshedlightonthecomplexeventsinfluencingcellmigrationduringdevelopment.Recenttechnicaladvancesinfollowingandanalyzingmigratingcellsinsidethelivingembryoofferthepossibilityofunderstandinghowdifferentsignalingsystemsregulatethefundamentalcellularprocessesunderlyingguidedcellmigrationinvivo.InemDrosophilamelanogaster/em,studiesofmigratingcellshaveconcentratedmainlyonhemocytes,germcells,bordercells,andtrachealcells.Interestingly,mostofthesecellswererecentlyshowntomakedifferentcellularextensionsandtousereceptortyrosinekinasestosensethechemoattractivesignal.Thisreviewdescribesourcurrentunderstandingofhowdifferentsignalingnetworkscontrolguidedmigrationinthesefoursystemsanddiscussestheimpactofnovelimagingtechniquesonthestudyofguidedcellmigrationduringdevelopment./p/div
