Synapticdifferentiationisnormallya€?induceda€?byregulatorysignalsthatareexchangedonlyatclosecontactsbetweenneuritesandtheirpredeterminedtargetcells.Thesesignalscan,however,bemimickedbycontactofeithercellwithsomekindsofpolymermicrobeads.Tofindwhatbeadactionisresponsibleforthismimicry,wecomparedtheeffectsofactiveandinertmicrobeadsonXenopusmusclecellsdevelopingincultureandonglass-adsorbedfilmsoflamininorfibronectin.Ourresultsshowthatinductivebioactivityisapropertyofnativepolystyrenemicrobeadsthat(a)isnotdependentmerelyonbead-muscleadhesion,(b)canbeeliminatedsimplybyexposingthebeadstoinertserumproteins,and(c)correlatescloselywiththeabilityofsomebeadstodesorbproteinsfromadjacentsurfaces.Quasi-synapticdifferentiationofthemusclesurfacethusseemstobetriggeredbythefocalremovalofperipheralcellsurfacecomponents,ratherthanbydirectbeadinteractionswithmembranereceptorsorionchannelsortheirgradualacquisitionofendogenousregulatorysubstances.Sincenerve-muscleinteractionalsocausesaneliminationofextracellularmatrixproteinsfromthemusclesurface,veryearlyinsynapsedevelopment,weconsiderthepossibilitythattheextracellulardegradationofperipheralsurfacecomponentscontributestothetransmissionofinductivepositionalsignalsduringsynaptogenesis.
