Thegrowthofspiculesoftheseaurchinembryowasstudiedinasimpleinvitrosysteminwhichprimarymesenchymalcellsattachtothesubstrata,migrateandfuseviafilopodia,andsubsequentlydepositCaCO3,whichinmostcasesisintheformoflinearrods.Theuseofautoradiographsfollowing45Ca2+pulse-chaselabelingrevealedthatinsuchasystemlinearspiculesthatformedhadtwofocalpointsofgrowth.ElongationoccurredbyadditionofapproximatelyequivalentamountsofCa2+tobothendsofeachrod.Multiformspiculeshavingvariablenumbersofelongationsites(tips)alsoshowedasimilarpatternofCa2+deposition.Thus,thegrowthofbothlinearandrelativelycomplexskeletalformsisapparentlyaccomplishedbythesamebasicmechanism.
