The effect of sulfanilamide (para-aminobenzenesulfonamide) on 2 strains of group “C” hemolytic streptococcus has been studied. The chronic disease produced by one of these strains was not affected by the drug after the infection was well established. When it was administered simultaneously with the injection of the streptococcus, infection was much delayed, or entirely prevented. With the other strain, which produces an acutely fatal disease, sulfanilamide prevented the infection altogether. After the repeated injection of a lethal dose of this organism, followed each time by a curative course of the drug, no immunity was developed.
