If a screening checklist [for child abuse] had 82% sensitivity for abusers and 88% specificity for controls (better than most studies) and abuse requiring protection occurred at a rate of 40 per 10,000 then 33 abusers would be identified and seven missed but 1195 false alarms would be raised. No wonder the subject hits the headlines.
