The following folk remedies to ease the child's pain during teething were once widely used by Pennsylvania German families:"Rub the child's gums with rabbit brain before the child is six months old; rub the child's hard palate during dentition with your thumb; grease the child's gums with fat from the pan in which meat was fried. Rub the gums with the rattles of a rattlesnake; pass a small fish through the mouth of a child to ease pain; suspend a rabbit's tooth about the child's neck; pass the comb of a decapitated cock through the mouth of the child before the cock is fully dead."
