High precision frequency stabilization of a 263 GHz continuous wave gyrotron

Millimeter and submillimeter wave gyrotrons withmedium (kW level) power got their applications assources for dynamic nuclear polarizationuclear magnet-ic resonance (DNP/NMR) spectrometry [1, 2] and variousmedia diagnostics [3]. One of the limiting factors for gy-rotrons applications is the relatively low frequency stabil-ity and wide spectrum of the output radiation. The solu-tion of this problem can increase the sensitivity and reso-lution in spectroscopy and open new prospects, such asthe coherent summation of radiation of multiple gyrotronsor possibilities of suppressing hydrodynamic instabilitiesin plasma. The known experiments on frequency stabili-zation of gyrotrons utilize phase lock control to one of theelectrodes of the magnetron injection gun, show that therelative half width of the frequency spectrum Δf / f andthe frequency fluctuations δf / f can be lower than 1·10 –9and 3·10 –10 respectively [4, 5].
