A Correlation Study between the Novel Stereo Vision Perception Test (StereoViPer Test) and the Frisby Test for Measuring Distance Stereopsis

?Purpose?to compare the novel Stereo Vision Perception Test (StereoViPer Test) for distance stereopsis with the Frisby Stereopsis test as standard method.?Methods?Frisby test is a well-established stereopsis test. The novel StereoViPer Test is based on PC with the 3D TV and gamepad or Kinect control measuring stereopsis in 5 m distance using polarized glasses (Figure 1). The test estimated in addition to regular stereopsis tests the perception times (the time from the images appear on the screen to the real reaction) as a function of recognized disparities. Five disparity levels (15, 30, 60, 90, 120arcsec) with 16 iterations on each disparity were tested. As soon as there are 10 out 16 correct responses on one disparity, it is considered the stereopsis reaches the value.Stereopsis of 147 healthy subjects aged 20.9±5.3 years (mean±SD) was measured by both tests. In addition visual acuity [logMAR] and contrast sensitivity [%] were assessed by FrACT. We performed analysis on significance differences by Mann-Whitney test. Correlation was defined as good, moderate, and none with Pearson product r (absolute value) between 0.6 and 0.8, 0.1 and 0.3, 0 and 0.1, respectively.?Results?Mean visual acuity was 1.40±0.36 [logMAR] and mean contrast sensitivity was 0.85%±0.34%. Mean stereopsis by Frisby test was 24.58±15.38arcsec, by StereoViPer Test was 32.98±22.67arcsec. Frisby stereopsis test and StereoViPer Test according to a Pearson’s r of 0.72 was significantly good correlated (Figure 2). Visual acuity and stereopsis by StereoViPer Test according to a Pearson’s r of -0.24 was significantly low correlated. Contrast sensitivity and stereopsis by StereoViPer Test was not correlated. Stereo acuity between the two stereopsis tests increased significantly with decreasing disparity. The perception time measured by StereoViPer Test was significantly inversely correlated to the increase of disparity. Age and perception time according to a Pearson’s r of 0.37 was moderate correlated.?Conclusions?The Novel Stereo Vision Perception Test is a new test measuring perception time and disparity simultaneously for far distance. In young subjects StereoViPer Test showed a high correlation to Frisby stereopsis test.
