Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET) is a new communications system for moving vehicles at high speed, which are equipped with wireless communicatio n devices, together with additional wireless roadside units, enabling co mmunications among nearby vehicles (vehicle-to-vehicle communication) as well as between vehicles and nearby fixed equipment (vehicle-to-infrastructure communication). Inter-vehicular communications aim to improve road traffic safety and provide multimedia services. VANET has become an important communication infrastructure for the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). In this work we have studied the impact of vehicle mobility on the quality of service in V AN ET based on IEEE 1609.4. The performance of this network is evaluated through exhaustive simulations using the VanetMobiSim and Network Simulator-NS2 under different parameters like delay, packet delivery ratio, packet loss and throughput. The simulation results are obtained when vehicles are moving according to a freeway mobility model is significantly different from results based on Manhattan model.
