Delayed surgery for displaced fracture of the anatomic neck and spine of the scapula: a case report and literature review

Scapular fractures constitute only 0.4% to 0.9% of all fractures andapproximately 3% to 5% of all fractures of the shoulder girdle.3 Fracturesof the scapular neck account for 7% to 25% of scapularfractures.1,6,13 Although anatomic neck fractures (ANFs) of the scapulahave been documented, the existence of ANF is controversial.4,15Bartonícˇek et al4 verified the existence of ANF by reporting 4 publishedcases of radiographically confirmed ANF and 2 of their owncases. Because the ANF fragment has no ligamentous connectionwith the scapular body and clavicle, it is fundamentally unstableand often requires surgery.2We report a patient with an ANFwithouttypical valgus displacement associated with a displaced scapularspine fracture that was reduced and fixed 7 weeks after the injuryoccurred.
