The 10 leading causes of death (COD) are the mostcommonly used health statistics by the World Health Organization (WHO) and in many countries, as they describethe relative importance of different conditions such ascancer, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.1e4 Becausethese lists are widely used and understood, health-relatedadvocacy organizations use the ranking of a particularcondition to argue for more resources to improve research,and prevent and treat the condition.
