Fault and Error Containment of Gateways in Distributed Real-Time Systems

The composition of large embedded computersystems out of heterogenous clusters requires gatewaysthat resolve property mismatches between networks withdifferent communication protocols and diverse computationalmodels. At the same time, fault and error containmentmechanisms are needed in order to prevent commonmode failures that could be induced by the propagationof faults between clusters. This paper presents gatewaysto systematically tackle these challenges. The introducedgateways contain structured collections of time-sensitivevariables associated with timing information (called a realtimedatabase). The real-time database facilitates fault anderror containment by temporally decoupling clusters. Foraccessing the real-time database from attached networks,we introduce network adaptors that ensure compliance withtemporal specifications expressed using state machines withtiming constraints. The containment of faults within clustersis of particular importance for mixed-criticality systems andincreases the robustness of the overall systems. The proposedsolution is experimentally evaluated in an example systemwith a time-triggered Ethernet network and a ControllerArea Network (CAN).
