Software Quality Assurance (QA) is a key area inthe development and maintenance of scientific softwaresystems in order to ensure the reliability of the outputgenerated by such systems. Approaches taken inimplementing QA within the lifecycle include manualtechniques, which require developer intervention, andautomated techniques, which can be completed by analysistoolsets. Manual QA techniques are labour intensive andtime-consuming to complete. This paper highlights the mainareas of software quality assurance and assesses the area interms of tools that exist to automate these techniques. Thesetools are evaluated at a high level to allow generalstatements to be made and the key issue of non-generic toolsthat are applied across multiple language paradigms.Reviewing the background of automated software qualityassurance and general software quality assurance. Aframework is then proposed to fill the gap in automatedsoftware quality assurance, with the proposal to develop thisframework.
