Characterization of TiC and α-Ti coating on graphite prepared by Powder Immersion Reaction Assisted Coating (PIRAC) Oxidized at 1000°C in Air

StudyoftheformationofTiCandα-TicoatingongraphitehasbeensuccessfullycarriedoutbymeansPIRACmethod.Graphiteblockswereimmersedintoamixedoftitaniumpowdercontaining4wt%iodineandthenproceedat1000°Cfor10hoursinargonatmosphere.Twodifferenttreatmentofgraphiteblockswerecarriedout;withandwithoutdispersionZrO2inthegraphitesurfacebeforeheattreatment.CharacterizationsofcoatedsurfacewereincludeX-raydiffractionforphaseandcrystallineanalysis,SEMandEDXanalysistodeterminethetopographyanddistributionofelementsincoatedfilm.ForsamplewithoutZrO2,asaresultofinteractionbetweentitaniumandgraphite,carbondiffusionoccurredandTiCcoatedfilmwereformed.WhereassamplewiththedispersantofZrO2onthegraphitesurfacecauseddiffusionofcarbonintothetitaniumdidnotoccur,asaresultα-Tiwereformed.Oxidationtestat1000°CinairshowedthatTiCandα-Ticoatedfilmunderwentoxidation.InbothcasesTiO2wasobservedasaresultsofoxidation...
