Altered Membrane Potential and Electrolyte in Sickle Cell Anemia

Aim: This study has been to evaluate the level of mem-brane potential and electrolyte in sickle cell diseasepatients. Material and methods: 100 sickle cell pa-tients in steady state ages 5 to 30 years attending Gen-eral Hospital Owerri were used in the study while 100normal subjects (HbAA) were used as control. Also30 HbSS in crisis have been involved. Results: Theresults obtained showed that the level of membranepotential was significantly lower in sickle cell anemiaas compared to the controls. Also, the level of the elec-trolyte was found significantly decreased in HbSS whencompared with HbAA at P0.05. Conclusion: Themembrane potential translates to energy which meansthat there is less energy in sickle cell disease which islinked to electrolyte imbalance. Hence people withsickle disease should be monitored closely for their elec-trolytes to avoid crisis.
