Laser-induced breakdown spect ro scopy (LIBS), a versatile a nalyt ica l tool to det ermine sample compo sitio ns, has recently been app lied to mo nitor and control laser material processing. By ob- serving the induced p lasma during laser machining, an insig ht of the current pro cessing stage can be gaine d. The aim o f t his project is to use t he already present plasma in laser material pro cessing to improve the quality of t he product by means of spectroscopic analysis. Experimental studies have been carried out loo king for useful co rrelatio ns between material processing parameters and spec- troscopic plasma signal. The presence o f such characterist ic pat terns in t he spectral data can be ut i- lize d to implement a control strategy to mo nitor the process.
