Workplace Violence: Identification and Prevention

Episodes of workplace violence have tripled in the last decade, reaching upwards of a million people per year by 2010. The phenomenon of workplace violence is nothing new, but rather, is gaining increasing attention due to increased levels of violence, the number of violent episodes, and media attention. This paper addresses actual cases of workplace violence, studies of workplace violence, and identification and prevention strategies for organizations and employees. A "one size fits all" approach is not acceptable, as workplace violence affects all types and sizes of organizations. Implementing prevention strategies prepares organizations and employees to identify the signs of workplace violence, individuals at-risk for violence, and strategies for careful management of an incident of workplace violence.
