Survey on Energy Efficiency in Office and Residential Computing Environments

Energy efficiency of computing equipment in office and residential environments gets more and more important, with respect to the world-wide desire to reduce CO2 emissions and the increasing cost of energy. While hardware itself gets cheaper, the cost of energy begins to dominate the total cost of ownership of a product. This paper gives an overview on energy saving methods that are appliedtoday, with a special focus on office and residential environments. Currently used methods are classified into three categories: (1) autonomous management of devices, (2) coordinated management of devices, and (3) coordinated management of services. Various implementations of these methods in office and residential environments are described and compared to each other. The comparison illustrates possible directions of future research in the area of energy efficiency.
