Geography, Geomorphology, Stratigraphy and Tectonics of the Euphrates River Basin

摘要

The geography, geomorphology, tectonics, stratigraphy and economic potentials ofthe Euphrates river basin are given with emphasis on Iraqi parts. The course of theriver inside Iraq runs mainly in the Mesopotamian Plain, whereas basin of the riveris located in different tectonic zones with different characters. Accordingly, theQuaternary sediments being dominated by the alluvial plain sediments cover largeparts of the river’s course, whereas the basin area is covered mainly by differentrocks types of different ages. The main economic potentials are the existing oilfields, limestone deposits for cement industry and many non-metallic deposits.
