We live in a world that relies on technologyin more and more areas of life. As such, security hasbecome of crucial importance. New ideas in bothsoftware and hardware development emerge every day.A new paradigm that has proven its usefulness over thepast few years is cyber-physical systems. A remarkableaspect about these systems is that they are notstandalone devices; they are a network of interactingelements with physical input and output. Theircomplexity raises challenges in the area of theirsecurity. The present paper introduces a new approachfor ensuring the security of cyber-physical systems. Wedesigned a hierarchical system in which access rightsare established based on a public-key encryptionalgorithm. Digital signatures are used in addition toencryption, for authentication purposes but also tohelp verify the integrity of the system.
