Laboratory data systems are automated for a variety of scientificand management reasons. A key part to maintaining these systemsis to regularly assess the impact that automation has had on thelaboratory and the organization as a whole. Smith Kline BeechamR&D is using a number of different types of measurement, as wellas a number of different tools, for measuring how automatedlaboratory systems are affecting the workflow and information flowin the laboratory. This targeted programme of metrics has increasedmanagement confidence in laboratory automation efforts, helpedanticipate data processing bottlenecks, and highlighted end-usersupport needs.
