CONTRIBUTIONS OF RURAL-URBAN MIGRANTS’ REMITTANCES TO FARMING HOUSEHOLD (HH) FOOD SECURITY IN DELTA CENTRAL AGRICULTURAL ZONE, DELTA STATE, NIGERIA

This study was purposed to assess the contributionof rural-urban migrants’ remittances to household food securityin Central Agricultural Zone of Delta State, Nigeria. Three(3) local government areas were randomly selected for thisstudy from which three (3) rural communities were also randomlyselected and 165 household heads were purposively selectedfrom the communities. Primary data was collected fromthese household heads. Most household heads in the migrants’households were males with average age of 55.5 years, weremarried and had some form of formal education. They hadaverage farming experience of 21.30 years and average householdsize of 8.0 persons. Most migrated household memberswere in the age bracket of 20–30 years. The migrants remittedmore money back home than was remitted to them. The foodsecurity index was 0.64. Remittances from migrated householdmembers had significant and positive relationships withhousehold food security. It was recommended that rural-urbanmigrants’ should continue to remit money to their householdsfor continuous provision of food for the household membersback home.
