Acupuncture in Vienna: Data from the Outpatient Clinic of the Austrian Acupuncture Society on the Occasion of Its 60th Anniversary

We performed an observational study including all patients of our outpatient clinic in Neurologisches Zentrum Rosenhu¨gel,Vienna between 2007 and 2017. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an acupuncture unit incorporatedinto a public hospital setting of a European Capital.3512 patients with 64 different diagnoses could be included. Each patient received 10 acupuncture treatments on a onceweekly schedule.Visual analogue scale (VAS, 0e10 cm) and a questionnaire concerning the holistic approach such as symptoms, condition,sleep, bowel movement and concentration ability were assessed before treatment, after 10 acupuncture sessions andanother 6 months later.This observational, longitudinal study was conducted as an exploratory, hypothesis generating study without control group.Paired tests were performed between periods within patients groups.Results: Most frequent diagnoses were low back pain (549 patients), cervical syndrome (473), migraine (441), headache(215) and allergy (156).
