AstudywasundertakenofdownloadandusagestatisticsfortheinstitutionalrepositoryattheUniversityofWollongong,Australia,overthesix-monthperiodJanuary-June2006.Thedegreetowhichresearchoutputwasmadeavailable,viaopenaccess,onInternetsearchengineswasquantified.Googlewasidentifiedastheprimaryaccessandreferralpoint,generating95.8%ofthemeasurablefulltextdownloadsofrepositorycontent.Furtherlong-termstudiesneedtobecarriedouttomorepreciselyidentifyfactorsaffectingdownloadratesofrepositorycontent.Thisdatawillassistinstitutionsandfacultyinmeasuringresearchimpactandperformance,asanadjuncttotraditionalbibliometrictoolssuchascitationindexes.
