Using the Audit Checklist for the Certification of a Trusted Digital Repository as a Framework for Evaluating Repository Software Applications: A Progress Report

DigitallibraryinitiativeshaveencouragedthedevelopmentandimplementationofrepositorysoftwareapplicationssuchasDSpace,Eprints,andGreenstone.Theseapplicationsarebeingcommonlydeployedwithinthecontextofinstitutionalordigitalrepositories.Astheboundariesof,andlandscapesaround,institutionalordigitalrepositoriesbecomemoreclearlydefinedandexpressed,thereisagreaterneedtohaveusefulmethodsforevaluatingrepositorysoftwareapplicationsandtheroletheyplayinthebroadercontextofrepositoryservices.Regardingdigitalpreservationspecifically,the2005RLG/NARAAuditChecklistfortheCertificationofaTrustedDigitalRepository,DraftforPublicComment(AuditChecklist)isacurrentdocumentunderconsiderationfordetermininganinstitution'sabilitytobeaTrustedDigitalRepository.TheNDIIPP-sponsoredECHODEPositoryprojectisproposingaframeworkofevaluationforrepositorysoftwareapplicationsbasedontheAuditChecklistinconjunctionwithacommonsoftwareevaluationscoringmethodology.Thispaperprovidesanoverviewofourworktodateinthisarea.
